Demand for construction workers in Ireland is at an all time high with many roles available in all occupations and the Construction Industry Federation looking for over 110,000 additional workers for its members to ” rebuild Ireland “ over the next 3 years .
Many major construction firms have gone overseas to try to meet this demand by hiring non-nationals.
These efforts have run into the sand as overseas construction workers are turning down offers with strong and attractive packages due to the lack of rental accommodation and high property prices .
Recent surveys have shown that 80% of builders now face an acute skills shortage which is impacting on their ability to deliver projects .
The list of occupations that are impossible for builders to fill include,
. Quantity Surveyors
. Civil Engineers
. Commercial Managers
. Mechanical Engineers
. Electrical Engineers
. Plasterers
. Carpenters
. Electricians
. Bricklayers
. Plumbers
Builders and indeed the Irish Government are scratching their heads to come up with a solution to this urgent demand which is impacting on not just major infrastructure projects but delaying the Governments house building plan .
In New Zealand the Government there are developing a new construction strategy to combat skills shortages in the sector .New Zealand is in the middle of a construction boom with significant pressure on the Government’s home building programme ” Kiwibuild ‘and the new strategy will include innovative solutions like Back 4 Good to attract back skilled New Zealanders to return to live and work in the Country.
New Zealand needs more than 50,000 construction workers by 2022 to keep pace with current demand .
The comparison with the Irish situation is uncanny and the global demand for construction workers is putting pressure on salaries and available packages and benefits which in turn is pushing up costs and creating higher prices for property .
