New Reforms pave the way for less costly Motor Insurance

For those returning home to Ireland and overseas professionals taking up new roles the cost of motor insurance is one strong deterrent .

At yesterday’s Cabinet meeting the Government presented the Cost of Insurance Working Group Report on the cost of motor insurance .

The report has advised the Government to make many reforms and has devised an action plan to be implemented over the next 2 years .

The report sets out 71 actions across a number key objectives as follows ,

1 Protecting the Customer

2.Improving data availability

3 Improving the personal injuries claims environment

4 Reducung the costs in the claim process

5 Reducing insurance fraud and uninsured drivers

6 Promoting road safety and reducing collisions

It is hoped that after full implementation of the recommendations that more  fair and less expensive premiums for consumers will be available and that the huge annual increases in premiums will be a thing of the past .

However most consumers are less than satisfied with the timeframe for implementation and do not anticipate any real reduction is premiums until towards the end of 2018 .

There is a strong demand for legislation that will enforce price freezes on Insurers until such time as the 71 recommendations are implemented.

So hold off on buying that 3litre BMW just yet .

Will Trumps border tax damage IDA Pharma strategy ?

The first press conference of President Elect Donal Trump could put the IDA and its strategy for FDI investment from the Pharmaceutical and Bio-Tech sector in a tight spot .

Trump in his usual blunt fashion said that Pharmaceutical companies were ” getting away with murder ” with drug pricing and promised to change this in his first 100 days in office .

More worryingly for Ireland was his emphasis on bringing back home to the USA Pharmaceutical companies and their 1000s of jobs .

At his colourful press conference Trump went onto say that he would like to be known as the greatest job creator that God had ever created and that he was considering a measure to introduce a border tax to discourage companies from moving their factories overseas .

Currently Ireland is one of the leading locations for the Pharmaceutical industry in Europe and is regarded as a world player in Pharmaceutical production .

Around 120 overseas  Pharmaceutical companies have plants in Ireland including 9 of the 10 largest companies in the world .

Ireland is now the largest net exporter of Pharmaceuticals in the EU accounting for over 50% of all exports from the country .

The Government represented by the IDA has had a huge success in attracting this investment into Ireland which has resulted in 1000s of high skilled and highly paid jobs .

While it is highly unlikely that these jobs are a risk, the key issue for the IDA is that it will be less likely that these US companies will expand as Trump has promised that he will reduce the corporate tax rate in the USA as a Carrot to ensure that any new investment and jobs remain in the USA ,yesterday he produced the stick with his promise to introduce a border tax .

It  maybe time for the IDA to start looking East in terms of the next generation of Pharmaceutical FDI.

Double Digit plus house price rise for 2017 ?

House prices rose by 8% on average over 2016 according to the latest house price report by Daft.ie

Daft are forecasting that prices will continue to rise in 2017 and predict a 10% increase over the next 18 months .

In Dublin Daft state that house prices in the capital rose by an average of 5.1% which was double the 2.7% rise seen in 2015 .

Outside the capital the rise was greater at 10.1% however this was a drop on the 2015 rise which came in at 13.1% .

The National average asking price for a home in the last quarter of 2016 was € 220,500 up from €204,000 for the same period of 2015 .

Prices continue to rise outside the capital due to the shortage of available property in Dublin with sharp rises reported in Waterford  ( 15% up ) Cork (9.2% up )  ,Galway ( 13% up ) and Limerick ( 14% up ) .

House price inflation in towns and villages in Leinster is running at an average of 9% and at an average of 12% in Connacht -Ulster .

Meanwhile the First -time buyers Help -to-buy scheme opened today for applications.first time buyers can recoup up to €20,000 in a tax refund to put towards the cost of purchasing a property .

This scheme will stimulate demand in 2017 and unless supply starts to meet this new demand Dafts 10% rise prediction maybe underestimated and we could be looking at a price boom in all locations .

Returnees look for clarity on spouse naturalisation process.

Over the festive period we have received a large number of requests from users about their partners and their rights for naturalisation when the users return home to Ireland in 2017 to take up employment .

This is an important issue for many potential returnees and will impact on the key decision to return home for good.

The current position is that a spouse or civil partner of an Irish citizen may apply for Irish citizenship through naturalisation after 3 years of marriage/civil partnership plus 3 years residence on the island of Ireland .

However if you are of Irish association the Minister for Justice & Equality has absolute discretion to wave the conditions of naturalisation ,Irish Association means being related by blood, affinity or adoption to an Irish citizen.

If you want to apply for Irish citizenship through naturalisation you need to download the relevant application form which includes application guidance .

For more information on the application process please visit www.inis.gov.ie

Users flock to Back 4 Good platform over festive period .

As over 42,000 users visited the Back 4 Good platform over the Christmas period and indications are very positive that we will see a significant return of skilled talent to Ireland in 2017.

The huge response to the Back 4 Good campaign is confirmed by CSO figures that show the number of immigrants of Irish nationally has risen by 74% .

It is now estimated that 50% of those who left because of the crash from 2008 are now back home around 130,000 people .

As Ireland is on course to be the fastest growing economy in the Eurozone in 2016,the demand for skilled professionals is significant and estimated to be around 250,000 over the next four years .

The Irish health sector is battling hard to tempt workers back home however, their 3 day recruitment show in Dublin this week was attended by just 32 people on day one followed by just 52 people on the second day.

The Back 4 Good county strategy is proving to be a real winner with potential returnees and registrations took place over the Christmas period for Talent registers in each county .

From these Talent registers sector panel will be developed in relevant occupations .

United Kingdom top choice for Irish Talent moving overseas

LinkedIn has just published some interesting numbers around destination choices for Irish professionals who choose to travel overseas for work.

The most interesting and surprising finding is that the UK is by far the no 1 choice for Irish talent with 28% of skilled professionals who left Ireland during 2016 ( Oct 2016)  heading for London,Manchester,Birmingham and other UK cities .

Indeed the top 5 countries of choice are United Kingdom,United States ,Canada,Germany and Spain in that order .

On the net migration front into Ireland again the report contains some interesting results with Brazil in no 1 position followed by India ,Italy ,France and Australia and the sectors providing jobs for this talent are Technology ( Software ) Architecture & Engineering ,Healthcare ,Technology ( Hardware ). an d Oil & Energy in that order .

More worrying for Ireland currently suffering from an acute skills shortage across all sectors is that while a large number of UK professionals moved  to Ireland ,more Irish skilled professionals moved to the UK resulting in a net loss of Talent to the UK post Brexit .

Clearly the battle for talent is hotting up worldwide and Ireland needs to meet this head on by using creative platforms and solutions like Back 4 Good to deliver Talent to each town, village and county .
