As Irish construction expands at a significant pace a major skills shortage has now developed to crisis proportions .
The Ulster Bank’s Purchasing Managers Index published this week shows that house building activity has risen sharply notwithstanding the fact that in March Ireland suffered its worst weather for decades with snow and storms .
The job creation rate for builders reached a 7 month high .
Meanwhile the CIF the Construction Industry Federation which represents large building firms called for more state support in hiring apprenticeships notwithstanding the fact that it is the employers themselves that hire apprentices and it was the industry itself who discarded 1000s of apprentices during the crash most of whom heading to other countries to complete their apprenticeship and take up high paying jobs in Australia,Canada UK and New Zealand .
With over 60% of firms in the industry expecting to hire large numbers of skilled workers this year and throughout 2019 now is the time to look at what is available in the construction sector .
