Overview

We are seeking a skilled Dry Stone Waller to construct and restore traditional dry stone walls across County Donegal. This role involves working with local materials such as granite, quartzite, and sandstone to build structures that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The position requires a deep understanding of traditional techniques and a commitment to preserving the region’s rich heritage.

Key Responsibilities

  • Construct and repair various types of dry stone walls, including single, double, Feidín, and retaining walls, adhering to traditional methods.
  • Select, shape, and position stones to ensure structural integrity and visual appeal.
  • Collaborate with landowners, conservationists, and designers on both functional and decorative projects.
  • Maintain and restore existing structures, ensuring the preservation of historical methods and materials.
  • Work in diverse outdoor conditions across rural and urban settings.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Proficiency in traditional dry stone walling techniques, including bonding, pinning, hearting, and battering.
  • Experience with tools such as walling hammers, string lines, crowbars, and batter frames.
  • Physical stamina and the capability to work in various weather conditions.
  • While formal certification is not mandatory, qualifications from the Dry Stone Walling Association (DSWA) or similar bodies are advantageous.
  • A valid driving licence is beneficial for accessing remote sites.
