As we are heading into the holiday break in 3 weeks time we will see 1000s of construction workers arriving home for the holidays and considering if Ireland is an option for them to live and work in in 2019.
With a large number of Builders failing to fill many key roles on vital projects and with demand for yet more skilled construction workers increasing as a result of demand for housing the situation is now reaching crisis level.
Wage inflation is on a fact for most employers in the sector with the cost of block laying increasing by 255 in the past 6 months.
Some employers in the sector have attempted to source construction talent from locations outside the EU with costly job fairs, however they quickly discovered that meeting and greeting skilled workers at a job fair failed to translate to significant hires as most overseas workers turned down very attractive contracts due to the high cost of property and rent and more worrying due to the lack of any property to rent whatsoever.
This shortage of construction workers is putting the Government’s housing plans at considerable risk and without an additional 120,000 the state will not be able to deliver on the ambitious housing targets of Minister Murphy .
Back 4 Good now in our 5th year have subscribers that are keen to return home if the circumstances are created that allow them to do so without major costs involved to them.
The lack of available accommodation for overseas construction workers would not be an issue for returnees who want to live and work in their own town, village and county. Other factors need to be addressed so the Ireland can increase the construction talent pool significantly.
Our research has indicated a number of these factors and how they can be addressed.
Meanwhile our 5th annual Christmas campaign is well under way with our campaign tagline ” home for the holidays ? Why not stay ? and you can communicate directly with our diaspora during the holidays to explore options for returning home for good.
