Pilots in big demand as airline talent competition hots up .
As Ryanair pilots reject a significant bonus in exchange for some of their holidays and with the airline losing staff to its rivals on a daily basis, the demand for qualified pilots is a source of real concern for many Airlines .
Indeed both Boeing and airbus have predicted that the industry will need as many as 617,000 new pilots by 2035 .
These numbers are a direct result of growing economies ,airline fleet numbers are expanding as never before and projections are showing that at the current rate of pilots entering the profession ,there won’t be enough pilots to fly them .
Airlines are looking at innovative solutions to ensure that they have enough qualified pilots in their pipelines .Emirates Flight Training Academy is currently constructing a training facility in Dubai which will accommodate over 600 students at a time ,in Asia the carriers there are recruiting for experienced pilots from Europe and the US
British Airways,JetBlue, easy jet,Virgin Atlantic,Flybe and many other airlines have announced full and part-sponsored pilot training opportunities in recent years .However these are limited and highly competitive .
Meanwhile the shortage of pilots is driving salaries upwards with the average salary for a starting pilot in the US running at over $120,000 and Captains looking at packages in excess of $300,00 of course this will impact on customers when the go to purchase their next flight ticket .
Pilots are also voting with there feet and moving to airlines that pay better and have a strong Life -Work balance .Over 700 pilots left Ryanair in the last Financial year to rival airlines and this resulted in the airline introducing its flight cancellation programme .
The skills shortage in the sector will have similar impacts across the globe as pilot retention becomes the big issue in the sector .
