Tinkering with the work permit system will not address Irish skills shortages

After a number of proposals from Back 4 Good around the acute skills shortages currently impacting on the Irish economy the Irish Government have amended their work permit system to increase the amount of skilled workers that can enter the Irish Labour Market in 2020 .

This development is aimed at addressing shortages in a number of key sectors and follows a review of Irish labour market requirements .

More Chefs from outside of the EU will be now eligible for employment permits with certain occupations in the Construction, Health and Haulage will have additional permits .

As Ireland is running out of skilled workers and labour costs are reaching record highs these amendments to the system while welcome are simply tinkering with the problem .

These latest changes will ensure that there is now no quota for Chefs and all levels of Chefs including Commis Chefs will be eligible .

All Nurses ,not just those with a Degree ,will also be able to qualify for a permit and the system will allow permit holders to immediately bring their family with them and gives them the right to work.

On the construction side the new arrangements add further professional occupations in the sector and remove roles such as Foreman ,Architectural Technician and Construction Safety Officer from the ineligible list ,

A further 200 permits will also be made available for heavy goods vehicle drivers with huge skill shortages in the Logistics sector .

As Back 4 Good has discovered during our Christmas Talent drive many Irish professionals abroad are deciding to take up the option of remote working and are ” returning home ” by sitting in their own home overseas and working from there .

A number of factors have driven this development ,the taxation rates are significantly less than in Ireland , the shortage of property in Ireland ,rents and the high costs of it , the lack of a proper healthcare systems and of course the costs associated with returning home to Ireland .

However notwithstanding these issues Back 4 Good have developed county by county Talent registers with skilled professionals who wish to return home to their own County,City or Town either in person or remotely .

We have also created a talent process that manages the requirements of hiring an overseas worker through the Critical Skills Employment Permit application process and we are now able to source skilled workers both from the Diaspora Talent Pool and from non-Irish skilled workers across our network of platforms including ,
