Back 4 Good is working with a number of heritage contractors and rural property owners across the west of Ireland who are seeking skilled Thatchers to restore, repair, and construct traditional thatched roofs on cottages, heritage buildings, and conservation projects. These roles provide a unique opportunity to work in one of Ireland’s most culturally rich regions while preserving an important part of the country’s architectural heritage.

As a Thatcher, you will be responsible for preparing, repairing, and installing thatched roofing using traditional materials such as water reed, wheat straw, and combed wheat reed. You will work on both restoration projects and new builds, ensuring that all work meets conservation standards and the highest levels of craftsmanship.

The successful candidates will have strong practical skills and a deep understanding of traditional roofing techniques. Experience in thatching is highly desirable; however, individuals with roofing, carpentry, or heritage construction experience who are willing to develop specialist thatching skills are also encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities
• Construct and repair traditional thatched roofs using appropriate materials
• Remove and replace damaged or worn thatch sections
• Prepare roof structures and ensure correct pitch and support
• Work safely at height and maintain high standards of workmanship
• Collaborate with conservation specialists and property owners on heritage projects
• Ensure all work complies with health and safety standards

Requirements
• Experience in thatching, roofing, carpentry, or heritage building work
• Strong manual skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Knowledge of traditional materials and methods is an advantage
• Full driving licence desirable
